Why Art Deco Jewellery Remains Timeless

Hello! My name is Robin and last year, I decided to buy my wife a new ring as a gift to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I went to the local jewellery store and had a chat with the guy behind the counter. He was really helpful and we had a great conversation about all of the different rings that were on offer. I wanted to get something really special so I bought a vintage piece and cleaned and restored it myself following the advice that was given to me by the chap in the shop. My wife loved the ring and I discovered a new found passion for jewellery.

While the art deco movement wasn't the peak of fashion and design for very long, it has had a long-lasting effect on many people across the globe. There is something so enchanting about the geometric shapes and glamorous portions that is often lost in other, more intricate and minimalistic designs. Art deco jewellery is not afraid to show off and it embraces the fact that some pieces are meant to be louder and in your face than others. Here are a few reasons why you have to have at least a couple of art deco jewellery pieces in your collection.

Pairs Well With A Lot Of Outfits

Some pieces of jewellery are very hard to style because of the unusual colours or strange patterns that are hard to complement with an outfit. Art deco pieces go well with almost any outfit as long as it is not too experimental. They look wonderful with formal dresses and suits (as this was the fashion at the time) but rings, earrings, necklaces and watches can also be paired with more casual outfits as well. The straight lines and rich colours will draw attention but are not too hard to find matching outfits for due to the proportions and styling.

Well Constructed

Unlike a lot of other dainty pieces of jewellery that need constant maintenance every few years, art deco pieces have thicker borders and lines with well-defined joints that go with the style. This inherent part of the design language for art deco makes it much stronger than you might expect of other, extremely intricate designs. That does not mean art deco jewellery is ugly, it is still pristine and sharp in its own way, but it will always be one of the strongest types of jewellery you can find.

No Piece Of Jewellery Is Complete Without A Great Backstory

Art deco jewellery pays tribute to an era that was short-lived but explosive, and such a story is so important to accessories. Wearing them makes you want to dance, enjoy the finer things and splurge a little bit, if only for an afternoon or night. This was the age of movie stars, the beginning of huge skyscrapers that dominated cities and an explosion in wealth across the middle classes, but it is paired with the foreboding that the great depression was just around the corner. If you are a bit of a romantic about your jewellery and love pieces that have a great backstory then you must have at least a couple of art deco pieces in your collection.
